I’ve actually started this video 3 years ago, then dropped the project. Then I watched it again a couple of months ago and thought « Hey this isn’t too bad! ». So I decided to finish it. Once that was done I felt like it missed some sound, so I asked Maxime Olsson to add some neat sound design. And there you have it!
It’s my first attempt to make such a minimalist loop, and I had a lot of fun playing with illusions and trying to fool the viewer with simple shapes. I like to break down the assumptions one can make. For example the first part of the video is only contained inside a perfect square, so that the viewer believes that this is the only place where things are going to happen. It is also supposed to emphasize on the feeling of foreshortening when the cubes pop out of this original space. I also really liked making transitions between the 3D and 2D look. When the checker-board gets too small for us to differentiate the black from the white, it creates a natural transition to another dimension. Once again, things are not what they were supposed to be, and a shift in perspective can make us realise that.
Alright, that’s enough artsy blabbering, I just hope you enjoyed this, because it made me want to make more. And why not explore some new technologies like these 360º videos or virtual reality headsets…
Thank you for ready and watching! Take care.
